VCE General Maths is senior maths without calculus. In Units 3 and 4 it covers four areas: data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, matrices, and networks and decision mathematics. School-assessed coursework carries 40 per cent of the study score, and the two end-of-year exams carry the other 60 per cent.
Those are the headline numbers. What follows is the detail behind them: what each of the four areas asks you to do, and where the marks sit. Every figure comes from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, either the VCE Mathematics Study Design or the General Mathematics examination specifications.

General Maths is one of four maths studies in the VCE Mathematics Study Design. The others are Foundation Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. It teaches maths that applies to real situations: data, money, grids and networks. It leaves out calculus, which is the maths of rates of change. The study design describes Units 3 and 4 as a focus on “real-life application of mathematics”. Two broad areas of study sit behind that wording: data analysis, probability and statistics, and discrete mathematics.
Some students weigh it up against Methods first, and choosing between General Maths and Maths Methods is a question of where you are headed after school.

VCAA is direct about the shape of the pair. “Unit 3 comprises Data analysis and Recursion and financial modelling, and Unit 4 comprises Matrices and Networks and decision mathematics.” Both exams use those same four headings.
Data analysis is about reading data and saying what it means. You describe distributions using dot plots, stem plots, histograms and boxplots. Outliers are picked out with the fences set either side of the middle half of the data. Bell-shaped data brings in the normal model and the 68–95–99.7 rule, which turns a standard deviation into a percentage. Next come pairs of variables. You work with scatterplots, the correlation coefficient, which is one number for how closely two things move together, and the least squares line of best fit. Last is time series, where you smooth a jumpy plot, strip out the seasonal pattern and forecast the trend. A question usually hands you a plot or a table and asks what it shows.
Recursion and financial modelling is about money over time. Recursion means working out each value from the one before it. The topics are depreciation at a flat rate, by unit cost and on a reducing balance, then compound interest on investments and loans. Nominal and effective interest rates come in as the fair way to compare two offers. Reducing balance loans bring amortisation, which is the way a repayment covers the interest first and the balance second. Annuities and perpetuities close the area. An annuity pays a regular income out of an invested sum, and a perpetuity lasts indefinitely. A question hands you a starting amount and a rule, then asks for the balance after a set number of periods.
Matrices is about information set out in a grid. A matrix is a block of numbers in rows and columns. The area covers matrix arithmetic, the types of matrix, the inverse and the determinant. Binary, permutation, communication and dominance matrices follow, the last of those ranking players in a round-robin competition. The transition matrix does the most work. It models how a group shifts from one state to the next, such as which brand shoppers pick next month.
Networks and decision mathematics is about dots joined by lines. The dots might be towns, tasks or pumping stations. You meet Eulerian trails and Hamiltonian paths, which are routes that use every line once or visit every dot once. Minimum spanning trees are the cheapest set of links that still connects everything. Shortest paths use Dijkstra’s algorithm. Flow problems work out the most a network can carry at once, using the maximum-flow minimum-cut theorem, and matching problems pair people to jobs. The area ends in project scheduling. You build an activity network, then find the critical path. That is the chain of tasks which fixes the earliest possible finish. Every task off it carries some slack, and you work out how much.
All four areas make the same demand. The calculation is the middle of the question rather than the end of it, and the marks sit in what you say the answer means.

VCE General Maths Units 1 and 2 come first, and they are broader than the pair above them. Unit 1 has four areas of study: data analysis, probability and statistics; algebra, number and structure; functions, relations and graphs; and discrete mathematics. Unit 2 keeps three of those and swaps algebra for space and measurement.
The study design says Units 1 and 2 “provide preparation” for Units 3 and 4 and “contain assumed knowledge and skills” for them. The later content is written on top of that, so a gap in Unit 1 resurfaces in Unit 3 rather than being taught again.
One point is worth knowing early. Assessment in Units 1 and 2 is “a matter for school decision” and is not reported to VCAA. Your school sets the tasks and the grades, and only a satisfactory or not satisfactory result for each unit goes in. Units 3 and 4 are the scored pair, and how Units 1 and 2 differ from Units 3 and 4 is worth reading before you get there.

Four components make up the study score, which is the 0 to 50 score reported for the subject. The study design fixes the share each one carries.
School-assessed coursework is the work set and marked at school, and it comes to 40 per cent. The two halves are not equal. Unit 3 carries half again as much as Unit 4, so a poor run in Unit 3 costs more.
| Assessment component | Share of the study score |
|---|---|
| Unit 3 school-assessed coursework | 24 per cent |
| Unit 4 school-assessed coursework | 16 per cent |
| Examination 1 | 30 per cent |
| Examination 2 | 30 per cent |
Unit 3 coursework is an application task, a guided investigation of a data set with several variables. It runs 4 to 6 hours over one or two weeks. Beside it sits a modelling or problem-solving task on recursion and financial modelling, of 2 to 3 hours over a week. Unit 4 carries two further modelling or problem-solving tasks.
The two exams take the other 60 per cent, 30 each. Each paper gives 15 minutes of reading time and 1 hour and 30 minutes of writing time. Examination 1 is a multiple-choice book of 40 questions worth 1 mark each. Examination 2 is a question and answer book of short-answer and extended-answer questions worth 60 marks. Every question in both papers is compulsory.
The examination specifications go further and set the marks each area carries.
| Area of study | Marks in Examination 1 | Marks in Examination 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis | 16 | 24 |
| Recursion and financial modelling | 8 | 12 |
| Matrices | 8 | 12 |
| Networks and decision mathematics | 8 | 12 |
Add the two papers together and data analysis is 40 of the 100 exam marks. That is double any other area. If revision time is being split four ways, that is the number to split it by.
A formula sheet comes with both papers, and it is the same sheet for each. Students may bring an approved technology with numerical, graphical, symbolic, financial and statistical functions. One scientific calculator is allowed as well, and one bound reference, which is a bound book or set of notes. VCAA sets the approved list each year, in its notices to schools and the VCE Exams Navigator.
Knowing where the marks are is not the same as keeping them. Where Unit 3 and 4 students lose marks is a separate piece of work.

The study design is VCAA’s published statement of what the course contains and how it is assessed. Anyone looking for the VCE General Maths study design lands on one document covering four maths studies. The sections to open are the ones named for General Mathematics.
Three parts repay the time. The assessment section holds the percentage contributions, which is where 24, 16, 30 and 30 come from. The unit sections list the key knowledge and key skills under each area of study, which is the closest thing to a checklist of what can be asked. The assessment tables describe the coursework tasks and how long each one runs.
The current General Mathematics study design carries an accreditation period from 2023. It is written for teachers rather than students, so read it for what is listed rather than for study advice.

General Maths rewards care more than speed. Interpretation runs through all four areas. A boxplot, a loan schedule, a transition matrix and an activity network all end with a sentence about what the number means.
The second demand is holding a method together across several steps. Think of a loan balance after 30 repayments, or a forecast made once the seasonal pattern is stripped out. Neither is hard in a single move, and both punish a lost thread. Examination 2 includes multi-stage questions for that reason.
It also closes one door, and that is better known now than in Year 12. A university course that lists Maths Methods as a prerequisite is not satisfied by General Maths. Check the entry rules for anything you are aiming at before subject selection closes.
If you already know which of the four areas is your weakest, bring that area to a session rather than asking for help with maths in general. General Maths tutoring is easier to aim when it starts on a named topic, such as time series or transition matrices. The 2026 papers are not far off either. VCAA has Examination 1 on Friday 30 October and Examination 2 on Monday 2 November, both starting at 2:00 pm.
Data analysis, and not by a small margin. Both papers give it double the allocation of any other area, and the Unit 3 application task is a data investigation on top of that.
Yes, one comes with each paper, and both papers use an identical sheet. There is nothing extra to learn for the second exam on that count, and the sheet sits alongside the bound reference rather than replacing it.
The examination specifications name no brand. The requirement is an approved technology that handles numbers, graphs, symbols, finance and statistics. A CAS, short for computer algebra system, is a calculator that works with symbols as well as numbers. Check which device your school has chosen, because the approved list is republished each year.
The study design does not rank them. It does weight them differently, with Unit 3 coursework worth 24 per cent against 16 for Unit 4, so an early stumble is more expensive. What changes in Unit 4 is the kind of work: grids and diagrams instead of data sets and money.
