Plenty of students can do every General Maths question in class, then drop marks in the VCE General Maths exam. The marks rarely go missing because they did not know the content. They go on interpretation, notation, rounding, lost time, and a bound reference that slows the student down instead of speeding them up.
A bound reference is the folder of notes you are allowed to bring into the exam. Fix the four problems above and build that reference well, and a raw score in the 40s becomes realistic for a student who has put in the work.
Picture a student who gets a data analysis SAC back with a solid mark, feels on track, then loses a run of marks in the exam on questions they could have answered. That gap is common, and it is fixable. This guide is written from the side of the marking desk. It walks through where Unit 3 and 4 students lose marks, area by area, then the avoidable slips that cost marks across the whole paper. The focus is on how marks are awarded, not generic study tips.
The current VCE General Mathematics study design (2023 to 2027) sets four areas of study. Unit 3 has data analysis and recursion and financial modelling. Unit 4 has matrices and networks and decision mathematics. Each area has a typical place where students bleed marks.
Data analysis (Unit 3) is about describing data, comparing groups, and finding links between them. The marks go on interpretation, not calculation. A question might give you a correlation between two things and ask you to interpret it. Writing ‘strong positive’ is a start, but the mark is in saying what that link means for the two things being measured.
Recursion and financial modelling (Unit 3) uses step-by-step rules to model savings, loans, and investments. A classic slip is being asked for the rule that gives the next term, then writing a formula for the term itself, or the reverse. Mixing up nominal and effective interest rates, or a small error in a multi-step loan question, costs marks the same way.
Matrices (Unit 4) are grids of numbers used to store and work with information. The common losses are the order of multiplication and setting up a transition matrix the wrong way around. Get the first step wrong and one early error is carried all the way through to the final answer.
Networks and decision mathematics (Unit 4) uses diagrams of points and lines to solve connection and scheduling problems. Shortest path, minimum spanning tree, and critical path questions reward a clear, labelled diagram. Trying to hold the network in your head is where time and marks disappear.
The exam rewards interpretation, not just the right number. An answer with no meaning attached often earns part marks at best.

None of this is guesswork. The VCAA publishes an examiners’ report for each exam every year, and the same themes keep coming up: multi-step questions, rounding, and interpretation in data analysis. More on reading those reports at the end.
If you take one thing from this section, make it interpretation. Across all four areas, the exam keeps asking you to explain what your answer means, not just to produce it. Students who train that habit pick up marks in every section, not one.
Exam 1 and Exam 2 also reward slightly different skills. Exam 1 is 40 multiple-choice questions, so it rewards quick, accurate work and good elimination. Exam 2 is written response, so it rewards setting out your working and interpreting results clearly. It is the same content, marked two ways, and being strong on one paper does not make you strong on the other.
Some losses have nothing to do with a single area of study. They happen everywhere, and they are the easiest marks to win back.
Both General Maths exams are technology-active. Time lost fumbling the calculator is marks lost, not just minutes.
Command terms are worth a closer look, because they decide how much you need to write. ‘Find the mean’ wants a single value. ‘Interpret the mean in this context’ wants a sentence that ties the number back to the data. Answering the first when the question asked the second is one of the most common ways to leave marks behind.
Most students fill their bound reference with theory and never open half of it. A reference that earns marks is built to be used at speed, under pressure. Under exam time, the difference between a reference you can use and one you cannot is measured in minutes you do not have.
One more thing on the reference: keep it within the rules. The VCAA sets conditions on what counts as a single bound reference, so check the current rules before you bind it. A reference that breaks them is the most expensive mistake on this list.
Strong VCE English text responses often use shorter quotes better. More evidence does not help if the evidence is not analysed.
A long quote can slow the essay down. A short embedded phrase is usually easier to control. The best evidence gives the student something to analyse: word choice, imagery, repetition, contrast, structure, narrative voice, stage direction, symbolism, or form.
Instead of writing, "this quote shows the character is lonely", write something more analytical: "the repeated image of empty rooms makes loneliness feel physical, not just emotional". That sentence does more than identify a feeling. It explains how meaning is made.
A useful quote test is simple:
An evidence bank can help, but it should not be a list of quotations alone. Group evidence by ideas and authorial choices.
A returned SAC is the most honest feedback you get before the exam. A SAC (School-assessed Coursework, the graded tasks you sit during the year) shows you exactly how a marker reads your work. Read the comments, not just the mark at the top.
Our tutors mark VCE papers, and the pattern is consistent: the gap between an answer that looks right and one that earns the mark is usually the working shown, the notation used, and whether the result is interpreted in context. A marker cannot give credit for the step you did in your head. If a comment says ‘define the variable’ or ‘units missing’, that is a mark you can claim back on every similar question for the rest of the year.
Exam revision is not the same as SAC revision. A SAC tests one area in depth. The exam tests all four areas together, against the clock. So exam preparation is as much about switching between areas quickly and managing time as it is about relearning content.
A simple routine helps. Sit one full past paper under timed conditions each week in the lead-up. Mark it honestly against the examiners’ report, then spend your next session only on the question types you lost marks on. That loop turns revision into marks faster than working through the textbook front to back. Practice papers are one tool in this, not the whole plan.
School-assessed Coursework in Units 3 and 4 counts for 40 per cent of your study score, split evenly at 20 per cent each unit. The two end-of-year exams make up the other 60 per cent, at 30 per cent each.
